National Farmers Day .

Today is National Farmers Day. The event is on the theme: “Planting for Food and Jobs — Consolidating Food Systems in Ghana”.

The 37th National Farmers Day will be used to honour farmers and fishermen for their enormous contributions to the development of the economy.

At a farmers’ forum in Cape Coast in the Central Region yesterday, participants called on the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), headline sponsor of the National Farmers Day, to extend its services to rural and remote farming communities to deepen financial inclusion.

They noted that the absence of financial institutions in some villages deprived farmers and others in the agricultural value chain, including processors, the opportunity to access banking services, such as credit facilities, to boost their businesses and cultivate the habit of savings.

The forum is usually held on the eve of the National Farmers Day.

It was attended by about 200 farmers, including awardees for the 37th National Farmers Day and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector.

It offered the participants the opportunity to engage stakeholders and policy makers in the sector, related ministries and financiers on issues pertaining to the sector.

Commendation

The participants commended ADB for keeping faith with its commitment to support the development of Ghana’s agricultural sector and farmers.null

They observed that the bank’s support had been steadfast and they were hopeful of greater gains with its continued support.

Some of the participants who spoke with the Daily Graphic said they were optimistic that the ADB would increase engagements with farmers for mutual understanding and improved productivity in the agricultural sector.

Extend services

A cocoa farmer, Mr Kwabena Daniel, said while they knew and appreciated the bank for its support to farmers, many rural farmers did not have access to the bank’s services

“For some of us in the villages, it is very difficult to say we even want to save our money because the bank is far from us and that makes it difficult for us to have access to its services,” he said.

A participant from the Upper West Region, Mr Remy Ngmen, observed that “the absence of the bank’s branches in our villages prevents us from having access to loans and other support systems the bank has for farmers and so we appeal to the bank to consider setting up branches in our areas”.

Support

The Managing Director of the ADB, Dr John Kofi Mensah, pledged the continued support of the bank to farmers and the agricultural sector of the country.

He stressed that the bank was committed to ensuring that all the government’s agricultural-related activities succeeded.

He said players in the sector, particularly farmers and fishers, had played critical roles in positioning the economy and catering for the food needs of the citizenry.

He indicated that measures were being put in place to ensure that farmers and fishers accessed credit facilities at lower interest rates.

“We are currently working on reducing interest rates for farmers and fishers as a way of supporting their efforts,” Mr Mensah said.

Aquaculture

The Director of Research, Statistics and Information Management (RSIM) at the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFAD), Mr Ishmael Nii Adjei Browne, for his part, advised the youth to tilt their interest towards aquaculture farming.

He said the sector was a strong complementary one that offered a vast number of opportunities which were yet to be explored, stressing that it would be timely bail out for youth who were unemployed.

Continued support

The Director of Agricultural Extension at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Mr Paul Siameh, said the ministry was ready to put policies in place to support all categories of farmers and individuals in the commodity value chain.

The Omanhen of the Oguaa Traditional Area, Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II, who chaired the forum, encouraged farmers to make use of modern technologies to maximise their output.

Former Manchester United Player Is A Penalty Shootout Hero After Two

Former Manchester United Player Is A Penalty Shootout Hero After Two Goalkeepers Sent Off
Former Manchester United striker Mame Biram Diouf was the hero in Hatayspor’s penalty shootout victory over Eyupspor, after going in goal and scoring from the spot.

The Sun reports how the Senegalese striker found himself at the complete opposite end of the pitch, when both the first-and-second-choice goalkeepers were shown straight red cards as the last man.

With the score level at 1-1 after extra time, Diouf stepped up to take his place between the two sticks for the spot-kicks.

The ex-Red Devils frontman coolly slotted home the first penalty before going in goal to preserve his side’s lead in the shootout.

Diouf didn’t manage to save a penalty, but was still on the winning side with Eyupspor missing their first and last penalties to ensure Hatayspor won 6-5 from the spot.

He moved to the club on a free transfer from Stoke City in August 2020, following a six-year spell in the Potteries where he scored 25 goals in 157 appearances.

Stoke was the third club which Diouf played for in England, after a loan spell with Blackburn Rovers and two-and-a-half years at Old Trafford.

The frontman followed in the footsteps of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in making the switch from Molde to Manchester, but did make anywhere near the same sort of impact as the Norwegian.

He was limited to only nine appearances in a United shirt, with his only goal coming in a 3-0 win over Burnley in January 2010.

That first season also saw Diouf secure the only major trophy of his career to date, as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side triumphed over Aston Villa in the League Cup final.

As well as playing in his native Senegal for ASC Jaraaf, he also spent two-and-a-half years in the Bundesliga with Hannover.

GFA DISMISSED REPORTS SUGGESTING THAT FIFA HAS RULED ON THE SAFA PROTEST

General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association [GFA], Prosper Harrison Addo has dismissed reports suggesting that Fifa has ruled on the alleged match manipulation filed by the South African Football Association [SAFA].

South Africa had lodged a complaint of possible match manipulation following their defeat to Ghana in the final round of the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

Senegalese referee Maguette N’Diaye awarded Ghana a penalty after Daniel Amartey was brought in the box of Bafana Bafana.

Media speculation over the last few days have had it that the referee has been banned by Fifa for a poor performance, but that Ghana would progress.

“As a responsible FA, we are simply waiting to hear from Fifa,” Addo told Kumasi based Akoma FM.

“Ignore all rumours saying Fifa has banned the Senegalese referee or thrown away their protest, these are false publications from South Africa.

“Ghana has qualified for that play-off and we are waiting for the draw next year.”

The decisive penalty earned Ghana a 1-0 victory in the Group G final matchday home fixture in Cape Coast, putting the Black Stars at the top of the table by virtue of a better scoring record.

The win, more significantly, sent Ghana into the third and final round of the qualifiers, alongside nine other nations.

In January, a draw will be held to decide the pairing of teams for a two-legged play-off in March.

“We cannot be afraid of any country in the play-offs, we are Ghana,” Addo added.

“We have qualified three times for the World Cup, won the Afcon four times, other countries must rather be afraid of us. We are all hoping to be part of the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

“The playoffs will be played in March 2022 and the likely countries Ghana could face might not be as strong as they are now.

“We should all have confidence in the team and surely Ghana will make it to the Qatar 2022 World Cup.”

Ghana are looking to make a return to the global gathering after missing out on the 2018 edition in Russia.
