Check the shocking decision Manchester united board want to take in January….

In a 30-man squad, the only standout area where United could justify January investment is in midfield. Ralf Rangnick’s insistence on a ‘double six’ has effectively reduced the central midfield department as Donny van de Beek could break into the starting XI as one of the two 10s and Paul Pogba is not due to be considered for selection for another three weeks.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was privately unhappy United failed to sign a midfielder in the summer but a combination of factors prevented them from bolstering the area. Sources say the unlikelihood of a midfield addition did not stop United from wanting to buy one but there was agreement across the club structure that a winger and a centre-back had to be prioritised. United signed Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.

Solskjaer used seven different midfield combinations during his last months as manager but remained reliant on the partnership of Scott McTominay and Fred, often derided by some supporters. The pair have started in all but one of United’s six matches under Rangnick and caretaker manager Michael Carrick since Solskjaer was sacked.

United held exploratory discussions with the representatives of Eduardo Camavinga but discovered the France international preferred to move to Spain and Camavinga joined Real Madrid on deadline day in August.

West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice was deemed unattainable due to his £100million valuation and the length of his contract, which runs until 2024. Amid an emphasis on top-tier additions, the United recruitment department was unable to identify an attainable target without compromising United’s budget.

United have never received a single serious offer for Pogba and were unable to justify the expense of a marquee midfield signing in the summer due to significant investment in the squad. The midfield department is also teeming: McTominay and Nemanja Matic agreed new contracts last year, when United signed Van de Beek. Fred remains a regular starter while Andreas Pereira and James Garner are out on season-long loans.

A mid-season move would heavily hinge on Pogba’s future. If United received an acceptable bid in January and Pogba wanted to join the buying club, they would have the leverage to offset the outgoing with an incoming. Pogba has shown no inclination to sign a new deal with United but could wait it out until the summer when he would be able to cherry-pick his next club.

Rangnick has effectively paved the way for Pogba to leave next year and Matic is about to enter the last 18 months of his contract. A midfield incoming is inevitable in 2022 but it is just a matter of when.

Sell

United are not expecting Jesse Lingard to leave next month even though he is approaching the last six months of his contract. Lingard is free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs in the new year and has been linked with a permanent return to West Ham, but the forward is currently planning on seeing out the season with United.

Discussions over a new contract between United and Lingard ended last month amid the forward’s unhappiness at a lack of opportunities and Lingard has not started in the Premier League for United since New Year’s Day in 2020. United would prefer to obtain a fee for Lingard and banked a meagre £1.5m loan fee from West Ham last year.

Martial and Lingard could both leave next year
Martial and Lingard could both leave next year
Ultimately, the power is with the player now he is in the last year of his contract. From a football and financial perspective, it would be senseless of United to expend energy on keeping a 29-year-old squad player, although they cannot go a year without doling out an ill-advised player contract.

Lingard, Pogba, Juan Mata, and Edinson Cavani are out of contract at United in June. Mata is open to leaving next month as he has only played three times for United this term and the 33-year-old would command a frugal fee. Cavani, 34, would have a purpose in Rangnick’s front two before his expected return to South America in the summer.

Anthony Martial would not. Martial, with one goal this season, four league goals this calendar year, and eight goals in the last 15 months, is a tough sell in the summer, never mind the winter. The 26-year-old’s contract runs until 2024 and 9 are best advised to cash in when an unwanted wantaway has two years left.

SERGIO KUN AGUERO HAS RETIRED FROM FOOTBALL

Sergio Aguero announces his retirement from football

Wed 15 Dec 2021, 11:50Sergio Aguero has confirmed his retirement from football during a press conference held in Barcelona today.

The 33-year-old was taken to hospital after experiencing chest pains and breathing difficulties during Barcelona’s 1-1 draw with Alaves in October and was subsequently ruled out of action for three months following a cardiac arrhythmia diagnosis.

He has now decided to call time on his extraordinarily successful and storied career.

City Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak sent a special message to Sergio to mark the Argentine’s retirement, saying: “The facts speak for themselves – Sergio is quite simply the most ruthless striker in the history of the Premier League.  It is extraordinary that his statistics, more reflective of two careers, are in fact those of a player whose time in the game was cut short.

“His impact lives not only in the club that we are today, but in the club that we will be for many years to come.  He has earned the adoration of the City family, and the respect of the football family the World over.”

Aguero left City this summer to join Barcelona, bringing the curtain down on an incredible 10 years at the Etihad that had seen him become an icon of the game.

One of the most decorated and respected footballers to wear a City shirt, Aguero scored a remarkable 260 goals in 390 games, making him the Club’s greatest ever goalscorer.

He is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of the Premier League era and is the competition’s most lethal goalscorer in terms of goals scored per minutes played.

Indeed, he is the highest scoring overseas player in Premier League history – and in January 2020 he overtook Alan Shearer to set the record for the most Premier League hat-tricks after registering his 12th treble away at Aston Villa.

In total, he won 15 major trophies during his time at City, including five Premier League titles, one FA Cup and a record six League Cups.

In March the Chairman revealed that a statue of Sergio would be commissioned to honour his unrivalled contribution to Manchester City.  This sculpture, which will stand alongside those of Vincent Kompany and David Silva outside the Etihad Stadium, will be unveiled next year.

His legendary impact was also marked by the installation of dedicated and permanent mosaic at the City Football Academy.

Everyone at Manchester City would like to wish Sergio all the best in his retirement and to thank him once more for the incredible contribution he made to our football club during his ten years here.

Chelsea draw Lille again in repeated Champions League draw

Chelsea draw Lille again in repeated Champions League draw

by SuperFrank () on Dec 13, 2021, 2:16pm

Chelsea have drawn Lille again in the second run of the Champions League last 16 draw.

The Blues got lucky the first time around, getting Lille, the softest option they could have hoped for. And, on the repeat… they got them again

This time it was even more hairy – it had come down to just Real Madrid or Lille, so there was great tension when the draw was made.

But in our case, at least, justice was done, and we got the same opponents. Considering we could have had Real or Bayern Munich, it’s a relief for us, especially given the way we were put into second place in the group by a goal in the dying seconds of the final game.

We will have to face the big guns later on in the tournament if we progress, but at least that first round draw gives us a slightly easier start to 2022 than we might have had.
